Nextcloud Whiteboard is a collaborative whiteboard app that runs inside Nextcloud. Users create and share whiteboards with real-time collaboration; the app is built on Excalidraw. It is distributed through the Nextcloud app store and therefore runs on a self-managed Nextcloud server. An optional WebSocket server can be used for live collaboration. The source code is licensed under AGPL-3.0.
The app is developed by Nextcloud, whose operating company Nextcloud GmbH is based in Stuttgart, Germany. Its privacy policy refers to GDPR legal bases and states that data is generally stored on servers in the European Union, with transfers to other countries under standard contractual clauses. Because the app runs on the organisation's own server, that organisation decides where the whiteboard data is stored and who operates it. For European organisations that want to keep collaboration tools under their own control, this is a self-hosting option from a German vendor with an open-source licence.
