Askia: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Askia is a market research software suite from Paris, made up of three products: askiadesign for survey design, askiafield for data collection and askiaanalysis for analysis and reporting. Askiafield supports telephone (CATI), web (CAWI) and face-to-face or mobile (CAPI) interviews. The company offers the software together with hosting, training and custom development.

Askia is based in Paris. A 2020 announcement from Ipsos states that Ipsos acquired a majority stake in Askia, and Ipsos is also a French company. The software as a whole is not open source, although part of the survey controls is published on GitHub. The website does not state where customer data is hosted and does not mention the GDPR. A European organisation should therefore check these points and a data processing agreement before use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Askia

Askia is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Askia scores best on data residency.

Askia is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Askia together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
