Framaforms: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Framaforms is an online service for creating and publishing forms and surveys by dragging and dropping fields. You share forms by email or social networks, embed them on a website and let others clone them. Responses can be viewed online, as charts, or exported. By default, forms last six months, with a limit of 5,000 responses per form and 200 forms per account. The service runs on the software Yakforms, which is licensed under the GNU GPL v2 and can also be installed on your own server.

Framaforms is offered by Framasoft, a French non-profit association founded in 2004 and funded mainly by donations. Its legal seat is in Lyon. In its legal notice, Framasoft names Hetzner Online GmbH in Germany as its hosting provider. No commercial parent company is involved. For a European organisation, this is an open-source service run by a French association, and those who want full control can host Yakforms themselves.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Framaforms

Framaforms is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Framaforms scores best on data residency.

Framaforms is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Framaforms together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
