Application Insights is the application performance monitoring feature of Microsoft's Azure Monitor. It collects telemetry from web apps, virtual machines, Azure Functions, Kubernetes and AI agents, mainly through OpenTelemetry. Teams use it to investigate failures, performance, availability and usage, with tools such as an application map, live metrics, alerts and workbooks. It is a cloud service within Azure; there is no self-hosted edition, and the browser SDK does not use OpenTelemetry.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond in the United States and is therefore subject to US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. Telemetry is stored in a Log Analytics workspace in an Azure region that the customer selects when creating the resource. A European organisation that records personal data in telemetry can therefore place the data in a European region, but control remains with a US provider. Microsoft publishes a Data Protection Addendum for its products and services.
