Tideways: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Tideways is a performance monitoring and profiling tool built specifically for PHP applications. It shows in production where PHP performance breaks down. The service collects traces of individual requests, using tracepoints or triggered manually through a Chrome extension or CLI, and tracks performance across the stack with alerts and a weekly report. Fatal errors and uncaught exceptions are surfaced with real-time alerts, along with PHP-specific insights such as autoloading and garbage collection. To install it, you add a PHP extension and configure an API key; frameworks such as Symfony, Laravel, Magento, Shopware and WordPress are detected automatically. Tideways is delivered as a hosted service.

Tideways GmbH is a German company based in Bonn. According to its data processing agreement, production data and backups are hosted by SysEleven GmbH in Berlin, and processing takes place in principle within the EU/EEA. The agreement also lists a few US-based processors for supporting services such as billing and support. For a European organisation, the service is therefore subject to German law and German hosting.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Tideways

Tideways is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Tideways scores best on data residency.

Tideways is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Tideways together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
