Bugsink: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Bugsink is an error-tracking tool that collects exceptions from running applications and shows developers when and why their code fails in production, including stack traces and local variables. It works with Sentry's open-source SDKs, so an existing application can be connected by changing its DSN. Bugsink can be used in two ways with the same product: as a managed service operated by Bugsink, or self-hosted on your own infrastructure, for example with Docker.

Bugsink is made by Bugsink B.V. in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The managed service runs in the European Union, and with self-hosting all data stays in your own environment. The source code is public on GitHub, but it is released under the PolyForm Shield License, which allows broad use but prohibits offering a product that competes with Bugsink. That makes it source-available rather than open source in the OSI sense. For a European organisation, it combines an EU-based provider with the option to keep error data entirely in-house.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Bugsink

Bugsink is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Bugsink scores best on data residency.

Bugsink is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Bugsink together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
