Azure Communication Services Email is an email-sending API from Microsoft, part of the Azure Communication Services platform. It is aimed at developers who want to send transactional, bulk and marketing messages from an application, using SDKs or SMTP. Customers can send from an Azure-managed domain or from their own verified domain, with SPF and DKIM sender authentication, delivery status, engagement tracking and a suppression list for opt-outs. It is delivered as a managed Azure service and requires a separate Email Communication resource.
Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond in the United States and is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. When creating a resource the customer selects a geography as the data location, for example Europe, France, Germany, Norway or Switzerland. According to Microsoft, email content is processed in that data location and data at rest stays there, although data may transit or be processed in other geographies. Microsoft describes itself as a processor of the data. European organisations should weigh the chosen geography against the jurisdiction of the provider.
