Azure Virtual Desktop is Microsoft's desktop and app virtualisation service that runs on Azure. Organisations use it to deliver Windows 11, Windows 10 or Windows Server as full desktops or as individual applications (RemoteApp), with single-session or shared multi-session hosts and automatic scaling up and down. Microsoft operates the broker and gateway infrastructure; you manage the images and virtual machines in your own Azure subscription. Users connect through the Windows App, the Remote Desktop client or a web browser. Deployments are managed through the Azure portal, CLI, PowerShell and REST API, and a hybrid variant exists for on-premises hosts.
Azure Virtual Desktop is provided by Microsoft, a US company headquartered in Redmond, Washington, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act can apply. Session hosts run in the Azure region you choose, including EU regions. According to Microsoft, its EU Data Boundary commits it to store and process customer data for regional Azure services deployed in an EU region within the EU and EFTA, with limited exceptions. The service is proprietary and not open source.
