Basware: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Basware is a Finnish software company from Espoo that supplies solutions for accounts-payable automation, e-invoicing and purchase-to-pay. Its products include AI-assisted invoice processing, an e-invoicing network for sending and receiving invoices, compliance functions for local fiscal requirements, checks of invoices, suppliers and bank accounts, and e-procurement. It targets large enterprises and their finance departments. Basware is delivered as a cloud platform and connects to ERP systems such as SAP.

Basware has been delisted since 2022, when a consortium of Accel-KKR, Long Path Partners and Briarwood acquired more than 96 percent of the shares. Accel-KKR is a US investor, which is a CLOUD Act signal. According to its general terms, Basware is contractually bound to host its EEA-related platform within the EEA. For operation and support, data is also transferred to entities in countries including India, the United States and Australia, under standard contractual clauses. The website mentions no open-source edition.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Basware

Basware is headquartered in FI and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Basware scores best on data residency.

Basware is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Basware together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
