Medius: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Medius is a cloud software provider for finance teams, centred on accounts payable (AP) automation. Its suite covers invoice processing and matching, supplier statement reconciliation, payments, fraud and risk detection, procurement, expense management, sourcing, contract management and supplier onboarding. Medius is delivered as software as a service.

Medius is a Swedish company and is therefore headquartered in the EU. Marlin Equity Partners, a US private equity firm, agreed to acquire it in 2017 and is its majority owner, so a US parent applies, which is the CLOUD Act signal. According to its sub-processor list, Medius hosts on Microsoft Azure, and the region follows the customer's primary location: the EU, the USA, the UK or Australia, while the supplier portal is operated from the EU. A European organisation should therefore confirm in writing which hosting region applies to its tenant. Medius is proprietary software and not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Medius

Medius is headquartered in SE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Medius hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Medius is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Medius together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
