Esker: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Esker is a French software company from Lyon that provides cloud-based, AI-supported automation for the finance function. Its solutions fall into source-to-pay (sourcing, supplier and contract management, accounts payable, payments), order-to-cash (customer service, accounts receivable, cash application, collections) and compliance tooling for e-invoicing across regions. Esker is delivered as a multi-tenant cloud platform that runs on Microsoft Azure, AWS and other providers.

Since March 2025 Esker has been delisted: Bridgepoint (United Kingdom) took the company private together with General Atlantic (United States) and management shareholders. According to the website, Esker operates 11 data centres: its own facilities in France, Germany and the United States, Azure sites including Ireland and the Netherlands, and AWS sites in France, the United Kingdom and the United States. Australia, Canada and Singapore are also listed. European customers should therefore specify the hosting region they require when contracting. No open-source edition is mentioned.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Esker

Esker is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Esker hosts data in EU, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Esker is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Esker together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
