BBC iPlayer is the BBC's video-on-demand service, which also carries radio content. It is free of advertising because it is funded by the UK television licence fee. Programmes can be watched and listened to on computers, phones, tablets, smart TVs and through TV services such as Sky, Virgin Media, YouView, Freeview and Freesat, as well as on games consoles. Since 2016 a TV Licence has been required to watch iPlayer content. iPlayer is a closed service run by the BBC, which you use through an app or a browser.
The BBC is a British public service broadcaster headquartered at Broadcasting House in London, established under a royal charter. The service is therefore British and sits outside the European Union; there is no foreign parent company. TV programmes are available only from UK IP addresses, while most radio programmes can be heard worldwide. The sources consulted give no details on where iPlayer is hosted or where data is processed. The software is not open source.
