Brave: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Brave is a web browser from Brave Software, Inc., built on the open-source Chromium engine. Its built-in Shields feature blocks third-party ads and trackers by default. Brave also offers its own search engine (Brave Search), the Leo AI assistant, a private window that routes browsing through the Tor network, and an optional rewards programme based on Basic Attention Token. A subscription VPN covers the whole device, and enterprise group-policy installation is available for organisations. Brave is delivered as an app for desktop and mobile.

Brave Software is a US company with an office in San Francisco, which places it under US law, including the CLOUD Act. The browser's client code is open source under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, so you can inspect how it works. Browsing itself happens on your device, but services such as Brave Search, Leo and the VPN are operated by the company. For a European organisation, the browser is therefore technically transparent, while the accompanying cloud services fall under US jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Brave

Brave is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Brave hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Brave is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Brave together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
