Brevo: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Brevo, known as Sendinblue until 2023, is a cloud platform for marketing communication. It combines email marketing, SMS campaigns, marketing automation, transactional messaging, live chat, WhatsApp marketing and a CRM, complemented by a customer data platform. Organisations use it to set up and automate customer communication across several channels from a single environment. Brevo is delivered only as SaaS and is not open source.

Brevo is headquartered in Paris. In December 2025 the company completed a funding round in which Oakley Capital (United Kingdom) and General Atlantic (United States) became new shareholders; Bpifrance and Bridgepoint remained minority shareholders, and according to the advisers involved, management and employees are the largest shareholder. For European organisations, this foreign investor involvement is a point to weigh. According to a Brevo staff member, the servers run at Google Cloud and OVH within the European Union, in Belgium and France, and Brevo is ISO 27001 certified.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Brevo

Brevo is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Brevo scores best on data residency.

Brevo is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Brevo together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
