Budibase: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Budibase is an open-source platform for building internal tools, automations and AI agents. Users connect databases and business systems such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB and Jira, build apps to manage processes, set up approval and notification workflows, and let agents handle employee requests through Slack, Discord or Microsoft Teams. Role-based access, SSO, SAML, backups and audit logs are available for business use. Budibase runs either as Budibase Cloud, managed by the company, or self-hosted using Docker, Docker Compose or Kubernetes.

The source code is released under GPL v3, the client and component libraries under MPL, and paid features under the Business Source License. Budibase lists addresses in Belfast, Northern Ireland, and names Budibase, Inc. as copyright holder. According to its security documentation, the cloud servers are located in Ireland, in data centres with SOC 1/2 and ISO 27001 certification. Self-hosting lets you keep data entirely within your own environment. The United Kingdom is outside the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Budibase

Budibase is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Budibase scores best on data residency.

Budibase is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Budibase together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
