Canvas LMS is a learning management system from Instructure for schools, higher education and organisations that train their staff. It includes SpeedGrader for grading and annotating submissions, a gradebook, Blueprint courses for distributing course material across multiple courses, reporting and Canvas Data with event-level data files, and integrations with external tools. Instructure delivers Canvas as a cloud service, with mobile apps for students, teachers and parents.
The core of Canvas is open source under the AGPL-3.0 licence and is published on GitHub, with guides for installation and production set-up; some official plugins are proprietary. An institution can therefore host Canvas itself or use the version hosted by Instructure. Instructure is a US company headquartered in Salt Lake City and is owned by KKR and Dragoneer, which took it private in 2024. For the hosted service, US jurisdiction therefore applies, including the CLOUD Act. Self-hosting gives European organisations more control over data and location.
