Cesium is a platform for building 3D geospatial applications. It combines CesiumJS, an open-source JavaScript library for rendering globes and maps, with Cesium ion, a hosted service for preparing, tiling and streaming 3D content such as terrain, imagery and city models. Developers embed the library in their own web applications, while ion is used as a cloud service.
Cesium operates as Cesium GS, Inc., with an address in Philadelphia, and was acquired by Bentley Systems, a US company, in September 2024, so headquarters and owner are both in the United States. Its privacy policy states that cesium.com is hosted in the United States and that personal information may be processed there; it also contains a section on EU rights under the GDPR. Because CesiumJS can run entirely inside your own applications and infrastructure, European organisations can limit exposure to the vendor's cloud, but any use of Cesium ion places content in a US-operated service. The licence of the commercial parts is separate from the open-source library.
