Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool. It reads a codebase, edits files, runs commands and works with git, so developers can build features, fix bugs and automate routine tasks by describing them in plain language. It runs in the terminal, in VS Code and JetBrains extensions, in a desktop app and in the browser, and can be extended with MCP servers, skills and hooks.
Anthropic is a US company. Prompts and outputs are sent to the model provider over the network. With Anthropic's own API, the inference geography can be set to global or US only; organisations can also run Claude Code through Amazon Bedrock, Google Cloud or Microsoft Foundry and choose the cloud provider and region themselves. According to Anthropic, code and prompts sent under commercial terms are not used to train models, and standard retention is 30 days.
