CloudNativePG is an open-source Kubernetes operator that manages the full lifecycle of a highly available PostgreSQL cluster. It is configured declaratively through the Kubernetes API and uses a primary and standby architecture with native streaming replication, without StatefulSets for storage or an external failover tool. The project is delivered as software installed in a Kubernetes cluster, so the organisation runs its databases itself rather than buying a hosted service.
CloudNativePG is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and is a series of LF Projects, LLC, a Linux Foundation entity based in the United States. The project was originally created by EDB, a PostgreSQL company, and its website describes it as community-driven. Because it runs in the organisation's own Kubernetes clusters, the location of the data follows the chosen infrastructure, including clusters in the EU. For a European organisation this is an open, self-operated alternative to proprietary managed PostgreSQL services, with no vendor cloud in the data path. Governance rests with a US-based foundation.
