Cozy Cloud: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cozy Cloud is a personal cloud for storing and organising private documents. Users keep files and notes in one place, with a password manager (Twake Pass) alongside, and use apps on the web, iOS and Android. A free account is available with paid storage upgrades. The service is delivered as a hosted offering, and installation on your own servers with Docker is available on request. Cozy Cloud is being rebranded as Twake Workplace, a collaboration suite that also includes chat, drive, mail, video and calendar apps.

Linagora, a French open-source company, took over Cozy Cloud in 2025 and develops it as part of Twake Workplace; both are French. The core server, cozy-stack, is open source under the GNU AGPL v3 licence. Twake states that all data is stored in France and that the service complies with the GDPR. For a European organisation this means a French operator without a foreign parent, together with the option to self-host the open-source code.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cozy Cloud

Cozy Cloud is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Cozy Cloud scores best on data residency.

Cozy Cloud is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cozy Cloud together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
