Cryptee: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cryptee is an encrypted storage and productivity service for private photos, videos, documents, notes and journals. Cryptee Docs is a markdown-capable editor that works offline. Cryptee Photos organises pictures with hashtags and albums and shares them through end-to-end encrypted links. According to Cryptee, files are encrypted with AES-256 on the user's device before upload, using a key it does not hold. Cryptee is delivered as a web application.

Cryptee is run by Svartlab OÜ, an Estonian company in Tallinn that describes itself as bootstrapped, without outside investors. It states that data is kept on its own servers and infrastructure in Europe; its privacy policy lists sub-processors including Google Cloud (Ireland) and Cloudflare (Portugal). The front-end code, which performs the encryption, is published on GitHub so that it can be inspected; the backend code is not open source. According to Cryptee, data is only transmitted outside the EU in encrypted form.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cryptee

Cryptee is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Cryptee scores best on data residency.

Cryptee is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cryptee together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
