CrateDB: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

CrateDB is a distributed SQL database for real-time analytics on high-volume operational data. In a single SQL engine it handles time-series, JSON, full-text, vector, geospatial and relational data; sensor, streaming and log data can be queried immediately after ingestion. CrateDB has built-in replication, automatic failover and automatic sharding, and scales horizontally by adding nodes. Access is via the PostgreSQL wire protocol or a REST HTTP endpoint. You can run CrateDB yourself (on-premises, at the edge or in the cloud) or use it as a managed service through CrateDB Cloud.

The core is licensed under the Apache License 2.0; an OSS edition and an Enterprise edition exist for self-managed use. The developer is Crate.io, Inc., with an office in the United States and offices in Germany, Switzerland and Austria; the project began in Dornbirn. CrateDB Cloud is available through the AWS, Azure and GCP marketplaces; the documentation does not state which regions are offered. Self-hosting on European infrastructure gives you full control over where your data is located.

Why digital sovereignty matters with CrateDB

CrateDB is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so CrateDB scores best on data residency.

CrateDB is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs CrateDB together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
