Cube: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cube is a semantic layer for analytics. Metrics, dimensions, joins and access rules are defined once in code and then exposed through SQL, REST and GraphQL APIs to BI tools, custom applications and AI agents. Cube Core is the open-source, headless edition without a user interface, with a built-in cache for fast dashboards, and works with SQL sources such as Snowflake, Databricks, BigQuery and Postgres. Cube Cloud is the managed service, adding chat-based analytics, workbooks, dashboards and embedded analytics.

The client packages are licensed under MIT and the backend packages under Apache 2.0. Cube is developed by Cube Inc., a US company based in San Francisco. If you run Cube Core yourself, you decide where your data resides. Cube Cloud runs on AWS, GCP or Azure; the public documentation does not list the available regions, so ask whether a European region is possible. When the US company Cube Inc. operates the service, it falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cube

Cube is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Cube scores best on data residency.

Cube is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cube together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
