Databend: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Databend is an open-source, cloud-native data warehouse and lakehouse written in Rust and based entirely on object storage. A single engine supports BI analytics, vector search for AI, full-text search and geospatial analysis, with Snowflake-compatible SQL, real-time ingestion and transformation through Stream and Task, and schema evolution. There are three ways to use Databend: locally or in Docker, self-managed with enterprise support on the open core, or as a fully managed serverless service, Databend Cloud.

The source code is released under a combination of the Apache License 2.0 and the Elastic License 2.0. Databend is developed by Datafuse Labs (Databend Labs). Databend Cloud runs on AWS in the US East, US West, Singapore and Frankfurt regions; the platform and region cannot be changed once an account has been created. If you want to keep control of your data, self-hosting on your own infrastructure or with a European provider is the most direct option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Databend

Databend is headquartered in CN, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Databend hosts data in US, EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Databend is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Databend together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
