Disroot: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Disroot is a platform of online services built on principles of freedom, privacy, federation and decentralisation. It covers email, cloud storage, CryptPad, XMPP chat, pads, file upload and more. The email service is available through Roundcube-based webmail or through clients such as Thunderbird, K-9 Mail and the iOS Mail app, using IMAP, POP and SMTP. Connections are protected with SSL/TLS; for end-to-end encryption Disroot recommends GPG. According to Disroot, there is no tracking, advertising or profiling.

Disroot is run by volunteers based in Amsterdam. The operator is Stichting Disroot.org, a Dutch foundation, which states that it stores all data on its own servers in a data centre in the Netherlands. The service is funded by donations and contributions from its users. Disroot says it uses only free and open-source software, and the source code of its website is public. For a European organisation this means a service under Dutch and European law with no US parent company; however, Disroot is a volunteer-run initiative rather than a commercial supplier offering service-level guarantees.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Disroot

Disroot is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Disroot scores best on data residency.

Disroot is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Disroot together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
