Gandi Mail: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Gandi Mail is the email hosting service of Gandi, a French domain registrar and hosting provider. You create mailboxes on your own domain name, including one registered elsewhere. Every plan includes unlimited aliases and accounts, antispam and antivirus, webmail with calendar and address book, IMAP, POP and SMTP access for clients such as Outlook, Apple Mail and Thunderbird, two-factor authentication and server-side Sieve rules. An import tool moves email from providers such as Zoho, Microsoft Exchange or Google Workspace. The service is delivered as SaaS.

Gandi SAS is based in Paris, and according to Gandi its email servers are located in Europe. The company states that it holds ISO 27001 and ISO 22301 certification from BSI. In 2023 Gandi combined with Total Webhosting Solutions B.V. to form the European platform Your.Online, with Gandi remaining autonomous according to that announcement. No open-source licence is stated for the service. For a European organisation this means a French supplier with European data location, tied to domain management.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Gandi Mail

Gandi Mail is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in NL, also within Europe.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Gandi Mail scores best on data residency.

Gandi Mail is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Gandi Mail together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
