Dremio: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Dremio is a data lakehouse platform for analytics and AI workloads on enterprise data. It combines a query engine built on Apache Arrow that works directly on Apache Iceberg data, a semantic layer providing business context, an open catalogue based on Apache Polaris, and a built-in AI agent. Dremio is available as a managed service (Dremio Cloud, with a North American and a European region), as self-managed software on Kubernetes, on premises or in the cloud (Dremio Enterprise), and as a free Community Edition.

Dremio is a US company that SAP SE of Germany completed the acquisition of on 6 July 2026. Ownership therefore sits with an EU company, while the provider itself is US-based and subject to US law. For data residency, you can choose the European region of Dremio Cloud or run the software yourself. The underlying formats, Apache Iceberg and Apache Arrow, are open, which eases a move to other engines.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Dremio

Dremio is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model. The ultimate owner is based in DE, also within Europe.

Dremio hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Dremio is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Dremio together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
