Edge: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft's web browser, built on the Chromium project and available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. It offers built-in protection against phishing and malware through Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, a password manager and the Copilot AI assistant. Users can sync passwords, favourites and settings across devices. For organisations, Edge for Business is managed through the Edge management service or Intune and works with Microsoft Entra ID, Defender and Purview. Edge is installed as an application on the device; sync and AI features rely on Microsoft cloud services.

Microsoft is headquartered in Redmond, Washington, in the United States, so US law such as the CLOUD Act can apply to data held by Microsoft. Edge is proprietary software based on the open-source Chromium project. Synced browsing data is stored on Microsoft servers. For work accounts, Microsoft documents policies that let administrators disable sync or limit which data types are synced. European organisations that want to limit data flows to Microsoft can review these settings before rollout.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Edge

Edge is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Edge hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Edge is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Edge together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
