eID Easy: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

eID Easy is an Estonian company (eID Easy OÜ, Tallinn) that provides API access to electronic signatures, electronic seals and eID authentication. A single API connects to a network of qualified trust service providers, so organisations can offer advanced and qualified signatures without separate integrations. It supports national eIDs and bank-based methods such as itsme, Smart-ID and Mobiil-id, as well as the EU Digital Identity Wallet. It also offers time-stamping, signature extension and validation, a widget, a browser client, and plugins for Nextcloud and WordPress. The service is delivered as SaaS; according to id.ee, custom on-premises solutions are also possible, and signing can be done using file hashes only.

The company is based in Estonia. Its privacy policy states that all information is stored and processed within the EU/EEA, with no transfers to third countries, in data centres that comply with ISO 27001. The website also states ISO 27001 certification. The software itself is not offered as open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with eID Easy

eID Easy is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so eID Easy scores best on data residency.

eID Easy is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs eID Easy together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
