Eigent: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Eigent is an open-source desktop application for AI 'cowork': users assemble a team of AI agents that carries out complex tasks and business workflows, with its own browser and terminal tooling and integrations through MCP. The app is model-agnostic and works with your own API keys or local models, for example via Ollama or vLLM. Eigent is available for macOS, Windows and Linux and is published on GitHub under the Apache 2.0 licence. It builds on the open-source multi-agent framework CAMEL-AI.

The company behind Eigent is Eigent UK Ltd, which states that it is headquartered in the United Kingdom. With a local deployment, the backend and models run entirely on your own infrastructure and data stays there. In the cloud variant, Eigent uses Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure as subprocessors; the regions are not published, and transfers to the United States are possible, with standard contractual clauses as a safeguard. For European organisations, a local or self-hosted deployment is therefore the route with the most control.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Eigent

Eigent is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Eigent hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Eigent is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Eigent together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
