EOLE (Ensemble Ouvert Libre et Évolutif) is a GNU/Linux distribution for servers, intended for schools and other educational institutions. The distribution is organised in modules: each module is a coherent combination of an Ubuntu operating system and selected software for a specific task. EOLE 2.10 is built on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and, according to the project, is supported until 2029; version 2.9, built on Ubuntu 22.04, is supported until June 2027. You install the modules yourself on your own servers.
EOLE is developed by the Pôle de Compétence Logiciels Libres of the French Ministry of Education, with support from the Ministry of Ecological Transition. The applications are released under the CeCILL licence, which the project says remains within the GPL. EOLE is recommended in the SILL, the list of free software recommended by the French government. Because the software runs on your own infrastructure, your data stays within your organisation. Note that the modules register themselves at installation and then regularly send a signal for the project's deployment statistics.
