ERP5: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

ERP5 is an open-source enterprise resource planning framework, built on what its publisher calls a unified business model, and used to build business applications. It is distributed under a GPL licence and its source code is freely available. Organisations can run ERP5 on their own infrastructure. Nexedi also offers hosting and continuous system upgrades as optional additional services.

Nexedi SA is a French company with its registered office in La Madeleine, near Lille, and it describes itself as an open-source software publisher. Its legal notice names Jean-Paul Smets as the person responsible for publication, and the sources consulted name no parent company or foreign owner. Because the code is freely available, a European organisation can inspect it, host it itself or choose a service provider. The pages consulted do not state where Nexedi's managed services are hosted and give no GDPR statement, so those terms should be checked before choosing a hosted option.

Why digital sovereignty matters with ERP5

ERP5 is headquartered in FR and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so ERP5 scores best on data residency.

ERP5 is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs ERP5 together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
