FeatureHub: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FeatureHub is a platform for feature flags and runtime configuration. Teams use it to switch features on and off, roll out changes gradually and adjust configuration in running systems without redeploying. It is offered as a hosted service, FeatureHub Cloud, and as a self-hosted edition installable with Docker or on Kubernetes.

The source code is published under the Apache 2.0 licence in the featurehub-io GitHub organisation. The company behind the product, Anyways Labs Ltd, is registered in New Zealand, outside the EU. Its privacy policy states that FeatureHub Cloud is built on Google Cloud technology without naming a region, and that account data may be processed in any country where the company operates or engages service providers. The policy does not refer to the GDPR or offer a data processing agreement. For a European organisation, the self-hosted edition gives the most control over where flag data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FeatureHub

FeatureHub is headquartered in NZ, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

FeatureHub hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

FeatureHub is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FeatureHub together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
