flagd is an open-source feature flag evaluation engine. It runs as a standalone daemon with no user interface, no management console and no storage layer of its own, and it is configured through a command-line interface. It provides the flag evaluation that OpenFeature-compliant SDKs call, so applications read flags and targeting rules from a single backend. It is intended as a ready-made, OpenFeature-compliant backend for applications that request flags.
The project is released under the Apache 2.0 licence in the open-feature GitHub organisation, which maintains the OpenFeature specification. According to openfeature.dev, OpenFeature is a CNCF incubating project, and the foundation that stewards it is based in the United States. Because flagd is software rather than a hosted service, there is no vendor cloud in which evaluation data is kept. The organisation runs the daemon on its own infrastructure and decides where that infrastructure is located.
