Floorp: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Floorp is a free, open-source web browser built on Firefox. It offers workspaces for grouping tabs by task, optionally using Firefox containers to keep cookies and sign-ins separate. It also provides split view with up to four pages in one window, web panels in the sidebar, a customisable interface, mouse gestures and web apps that open in their own windows. Floorp runs on Windows, macOS and the main Linux distributions, and an iOS version is in testing. You install it as an app and need no account. Data from your current browser can be imported.

Floorp is developed by Floorp Projects, a Japanese project first released in August 2021 that works together with its community. The browser uses Firefox's Gecko engine. The code is on GitHub under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, supplemented by the Floorp Shared Source License for certain components, so the source can be inspected. The project is not based in the EU.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Floorp

Floorp is headquartered in JP, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Floorp scores best on data residency.

Floorp is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Floorp together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
