fobizz: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

fobizz is a German platform for teachers and schools. It offers digital classroom tools, including a digital and collaborative whiteboard, interactive worksheets, polls and word clouds, alongside AI tools and professional development courses with a certificate. It is aimed at teachers, schools and school authorities and can serve in school use as an alternative to whiteboard and pinboard tools such as Padlet or Mural. The services run in the browser; students can take part under a pseudonym without their own account.

fobizz is operated by 101skills GmbH in Hamburg. According to its terms, hosting is provided by Scalingo in Strasbourg and Scaleway in Paris; storage of uploaded documents runs through Amazon Web Services EMEA in Luxembourg, part of a US group. Optional AI features such as transcription use further processors, including US companies with European entities. The terms contain a data processing agreement and refer to standard contractual clauses for transfers outside the EU. A European school can consult the current list of processors and leave the AI features switched off.

Why digital sovereignty matters with fobizz

fobizz is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so fobizz scores best on data residency.

fobizz is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs fobizz together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
