Formidable Forms: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Formidable Forms is a WordPress plugin for building forms, contact forms, surveys, quizzes, calculators and data-driven applications without code, using a drag-and-drop builder. A base version is available through the WordPress plugin directory, and a Pro version adds features such as multi-page forms, file uploads, conditional logic and payment and marketing integrations.

The plugin is developed by Strategy11, LLC, a US company in Draper, Utah. Because it is a plugin, it runs inside your own WordPress installation, so your own hosting decides where form data is stored. For customer accounts, licences and its website, Strategy11 uses its own servers and service providers without naming locations. Its privacy policy does not mention the GDPR. The source code of the base version is public. For a European organisation the exposure therefore lies mainly with the software supplier rather than with where form data is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Formidable Forms

Formidable Forms is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Formidable Forms runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

Formidable Forms is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Formidable Forms together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
