FUSS is a complete GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian for running a school network. It covers server, client and desktop components, so schools can set up computer labs, teacher workstations and central services with one coherent system. The distribution is based on Debian and is downloaded and installed by the schools themselves.
The project is led by the Italian-language education directorate of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano - South Tyrol (Italy), which is also named as copyright holder on the project site. An outside company, Truelite Srl, acts as technology partner. According to the Developers Italia catalogue the software is licensed under GPL-3.0 or later and is fully open source. Because FUSS runs on the school's own servers and workstations, data stays under the school's control and there is no vendor cloud. The distribution is listed in the Italian Developers Italia catalogue, which collects open-source solutions from the public sector.
