GetResponse: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

GetResponse is a Polish email marketing and marketing automation platform. It covers email campaigns and autoresponders, automated workflows, signup forms, landing pages, a website builder, SMS and web push notifications, e-commerce integrations and webinars. It is delivered as SaaS and is not open source. The audience ranges from small businesses to online shops and creators of online content.

GetResponse S.A. is a Polish joint-stock company with its registered office in Gdańsk. It was founded in 1998 by Szymon Grabowski, who according to Wikipedia held the large majority of the shares in 2016; the sources consulted say nothing about the current shareholders. They also do not state where customer data is hosted. The privacy policy does say that data may reach processors outside the EEA, for example Google in the United States for analytics and the SMS provider Vonage, partly on the basis of standard contractual clauses. Check this when selecting the platform.

Why digital sovereignty matters with GetResponse

GetResponse is headquartered in PL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so GetResponse scores best on data residency.

GetResponse is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs GetResponse together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
