GlusterFS is a scalable network filesystem: software-defined distributed storage that runs on common off-the-shelf hardware and can scale to several petabytes. It provides object, block and file interfaces and is used for data-intensive workloads such as media streaming and data analysis. GlusterFS is software you install and operate yourself; the project does not offer a hosted service.
GlusterFS is free software under the GPLv2 and LGPLv3+ licences. It is a community project without a company headquarters of its own; the project website carries a Red Hat copyright notice, and Red Hat is a US company. Red Hat ended support for its commercial product Red Hat Gluster Storage on 31 December 2024. Discussions in the community describe upstream maintenance as limited. Because you decide where GlusterFS runs, data stays at the location you choose. A European organisation does, however, need to arrange updates, security patches and any support itself.
