goose is an open-source, general-purpose AI agent that runs on your own machine. It is used for coding, but also for research, writing, automation and data analysis. It comes as a desktop app for macOS, Linux and Windows, a command-line tool and an API. Through the Model Context Protocol it connects to many extensions, and it works with various model providers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and Ollama for local models.
goose is licensed under Apache 2.0. It originated at Block and was contributed in late 2025 to the Agentic AI Foundation at the Linux Foundation, which describes it as vendor-neutral. Because the agent runs locally, prompts and context go to the model provider you choose, unless you use a local model through Ollama. The code is open and can be self-hosted, so a European organisation decides where the agent runs and which providers it uses.
