HAProxy is free, open-source software for load balancing and reverse proxying of TCP and HTTP applications. It distributes traffic across multiple servers and offers, among other things, TLS termination, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, and ACME certificate management. The project was started in 2000 by Willy Tarreau, who still maintains it. Alongside the free Community edition, HAProxy Technologies sells commercial products and support, including HAProxy Enterprise, ALOHA appliances (hardware and virtual) and a Kubernetes Ingress Controller.
HAProxy is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 2 and runs on infrastructure of your choice, so you decide where traffic is processed. The company HAProxy Technologies is headquartered in Newton, Massachusetts (US), with offices in the United States and Europe; its French entity, HAProxy Technologies SAS, holds the trademark in France and other jurisdictions. Anyone buying a commercial edition or support therefore contracts with a company headquartered in the US. Running the Community edition yourself keeps full control in your hands.
