Houdini is a 3D content-creation application from SideFX, built around a procedural, node-based workflow in which every action is stored in a network that can be changed and reused. It is used for visual effects in film and television, motion graphics and game development, with tools for fluid, destruction and cloth simulation, procedural modelling, world building, rigging, crowds, a USD-based Solaris environment for lighting and the Karma renderer. Houdini Engine brings procedural assets into Maya, 3ds Max, Unreal and Unity. It is installed software for Linux, macOS and Windows, offered in editions for studios, independents and education, plus the free Apprentice version.
SideFX, formally Side Effects Software, has its head office in Toronto, Canada, with further offices in Santa Monica, California, and Singapore. Houdini is proprietary software, not open source. Because it is installed on your own workstations, scenes and assets remain on your systems. For a European organisation, the vendor falls under Canadian rather than EU jurisdiction.
