ImageJ is a Java program for displaying, editing, measuring and analysing images, particularly in scientific work. It reads many image formats, including TIFF, JPEG, DICOM and FITS, handles image stacks, calculates statistics for user-defined selections and offers standard processing functions such as contrast adjustment, sharpening, smoothing and edge detection. It is delivered as a downloadable desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux and can be extended with macros and plugins.
ImageJ was developed at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) by an employee of the federal government. According to its disclaimer, the software is therefore not subject to copyright and is in the public domain; this is not an OSI-approved licence. Because you run the program locally, no data needs to be sent to the developer. The newest version in the release notes, 1.54t, dates from May 2026.
