darktable: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

darktable is an open-source photography workflow application and raw developer for photographers. It manages digital negatives in a database, with a lighttable for browsing and organising photos and a darkroom for developing raw files. Editing is non-destructive and modular, from crop and exposure to advanced modules, with parametric and drawn masks, colour management, tethered shooting and Lua scripting. darktable is a downloadable program for Linux, Windows and macOS and runs locally; the source code is available.

darktable is released under the GNU General Public License version 3 or later. It is a community project by the darktable team, with a first release in 2009. The sources name no company as owner, so there is no foreign parent company either. Some features, such as online map sources, connect to external services. For a European organisation, this means photos and edits stay on its own systems and the software can be deployed and adapted without vendor dependence.

Why digital sovereignty matters with darktable

darktable is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so darktable scores best on data residency.

darktable is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs darktable together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
