Natron is a free, node-based application for 2D compositing and visual effects. It supports OpenFX plug-ins, 2D tracking, rotoscoping with per-vertex feathering, keying and matte refinement, a curve editor and dope sheet, and headless rendering for render farms. Community-made PyPlugs (gizmos) extend the node set, and scripting is done in Python. Natron is installed as a desktop application for Windows, macOS and Linux, with FreeBSD packages also available, and it works on local files rather than through a hosted service.
Natron began in 2012 as a personal project of Alexandre Gauthier-Foichat and was developed at the French research institute Inria from 2013 onwards. Today it is a community project on GitHub (NatronGitHub). Since version 2.0 it is licensed under the GPL (version 2 or later), so the source code is open. The latest stable release is 2.5.0 from November 2022, with a 2.6.0 alpha available. There is no commercial vendor, parent company or vendor-run cloud, so no foreign jurisdiction is involved; support comes from community forums.
