Infobip: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Infobip is a cloud communications platform for customer engagement. It offers messaging channel APIs for SMS, MMS, RCS, email, voice, WhatsApp Business, Viber, Telegram, Messenger and Apple Messages for Business, CPaaS developer APIs, automated customer authentication with multistep failover, and network APIs. It also provides prebuilt conversational modules for sectors such as finance, healthcare and retail. The services are delivered as a cloud platform and are used through APIs or a web interface.

Infobip was founded in 2006 in Croatia and is now headquartered in London, United Kingdom, which is outside the EU. In 2020 it received a major investment from the private equity firm One Equity Partners; no parent company is named. Since April 2023 the vendor has offered a separate region-locked EU data centre, so customers can keep data in the EU. It restricts access to personal data to the EU and countries with an EU adequacy decision, and provides customer support from inside the EU. The software is proprietary and not open source.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Infobip

Infobip is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Infobip scores best on data residency.

Infobip is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Infobip together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
