itsme: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

itsme is a digital identity delivered as a smartphone app. Users can log in online, create accounts, confirm transactions and sign documents with it, without a card reader or password. Activation can be done with the Belgian eID, among other routes. Individuals use the app, while companies and public bodies integrate itsme as a login and signing method in their services. The website offers a choice of Belgium and the Netherlands.

itsme is operated by Belgian Mobile ID SA/NV, headquartered in Brussels. The company was founded by seven Belgian banks and telecom operators: Belfius, BNP Paribas Fortis, ING Belgium, KBC, Orange Belgium, Proximus and Telenet. In 2021 the Belgian federal investment company FPIM/SFPI joined as a shareholder with a 20% stake; no non-European owner is known. The public website does not state where data is hosted, so a European organisation may want to have this confirmed contractually. itsme is not open source and is available only as a service from the provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with itsme

itsme is headquartered in BE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so itsme scores best on data residency.

itsme is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.
