Kanopy is an on-demand streaming service for public libraries and universities. It offers films, documentaries, educational videos and television series that library members or students can watch through a web player and apps using their library or institutional credentials. The service is licensed through the participating libraries and institutions.
Kanopy is headquartered in San Francisco, California. It began in Australia in 2008 and has been owned since 2021 by OverDrive, a US digital-library company, which in turn is owned by the US investment firm KKR; no ownership outside the United States applies. Notices published by libraries state that Kanopy visitor data is stored in the United States. For European libraries and universities, viewing records are personal data held by a US provider under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act, and no EU hosting option or published GDPR commitment is described. Institutions should clarify contract terms and data processing before use.
