KashFlow: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

KashFlow is an online accounting and invoicing product for small businesses, sole traders and contractors, now sold under the IRIS KashFlow name. It covers invoicing, bank reconciliation, VAT submission, payments and reporting, and it is available as a web application and a mobile app. The legal entity is KashFlow Software Ltd, a UK company.

KashFlow was acquired by IRIS Software Group in 2013, and its privacy and terms links point to the IRIS website. In December 2023 Leonard Green & Partners, a US private equity firm, bought a co-controlling stake in IRIS from Hg, which kept its own co-controlling position; ICG remains a minority investor. Because a US investor shares control of the group, the question of US access to data deserves attention. The vendor's public pages do not state where customer data is hosted and contain no GDPR statement, so a European organisation should confirm hosting and transfer terms before use.

Why digital sovereignty matters with KashFlow

KashFlow is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

KashFlow hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

KashFlow is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs KashFlow together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
